More than 30 years ago Marvin Young began experimenting with 110 and Polaroid cameras. While a lot has changed since then, the power of the photographic image as well as the worldwide interest in capturing life's memories endures.
Young currently serves as a full-time photographer for Creative Services, a state agency under Kentucky's Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet. While much of the work revolves around supporting and documenting the work of Gov. Steve Beshear, the division also works extensively with numerous state agencies.
Prior to joining Creative Services, Young traveled extensively from 2000-2007 photographing family literacy programs for the Louisville-based National Center for Family Literacy. Young continues to work with this nationally recognized organization that has transformed the lives of over one million families through its innovative approach to empowerment through education and economic initiatives.
Young spent the better part of the 90s at the University of Louisville supporting the communications and marketing efforts of the university as a public information officer and photographer. While there he received first place awards in photography from the Kentucky Association of Government Communicators, Council for the Advancement and Support of Education and PRSA-IABC.
Also during the 90s, Young achieved the distinct honor of being selected as official photographer for the Kentucky Derby Festival, charged with capturing images to promote the internationally known two-week celebration. In 2006, the Festival celebrated the photographic image by showcasing the work of Young and fellow photographers Jonathan Roberts and Jamie Rhodes in a collage of nine photos on its official poster.
Young's solid foundation in photojournalism came as a result of his experiences as a photojournalist for the Louisville Defender Newspaper. This historic publication has chronicled the events and issues of Louisville’s African American community since 1933.
